The Role
We're hiring a Backend / Platform Engineer to own the systems that make NORA a dependable enterprise product: the services, multi-tenant data plane, async workers, and the infrastructure they run on. You'll build and operate the platform backbone — the layer everything else depends on — and treat tenant isolation, security, and correctness as design properties, not afterthoughts.
What You'll Own
Service Fleet: Node/Express and Python/FastAPI microservices: API gateway, auth/tenancy, workspace, billing, usage metering, notifications, admin, and query execution — built on a shared SDK.
Multi-Tenant Isolation: Schema-per-tenant Postgres model: per-org schemas, strict search_path discipline, atomic tenant provisioning, and provable isolation across every code path.
Data Plane: Multiple logical Postgres databases (platform, warehouse, session memory), connection-pool isolation, and the ingestion path that loads customer source databases into the analytical warehouse.
Async Backbone: Queue consumers and workers with retries, dead-letter handling, idempotency, and graceful shutdown.
Platform Reliability: Containerised deploys on AWS, health/metrics endpoints, structured logging, observability, performance, and cost.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build, deploy, and operate backend services end-to-end — APIs, data models, and workers.
Uphold platform non-negotiables: parameterised SQL everywhere, secrets via secrets manager (never in env/config), JWT verified once at the gateway with downstream services trusting canonical headers, tenant tables accessed only through safe isolation helpers.
Harden tenancy and security; review for cross-tenant data leakage as a first-class concern.
Maintain shared platform libraries (auth, logging, secrets, DB pooling, resilient HTTP client, queue workers) so patterns aren't reinvented per service.
Extend the warehouse ingestion path to new customer database types (Postgres, MySQL, BigQuery, Snowflake).
Run the production stack: deploys, monitoring, incident response, capacity planning, and cost management.
Collaborate with Applied-AI on the SQL execution/introspection engine and with Product/Frontend on the APIs behind chat and analytics.
Required Qualifications
6+ years building and operating backend services in production, ideally in multi-tenant SaaS.
Strong PostgreSQL: query design, indexing, pooling, transactions; bonus for schema- or RLS-based multi-tenancy.
Proficient in Node.js and comfortable in Python (or strong in one and eager to grow the other).
Hands-on with event-driven systems — queues, workers, retries, idempotency, dead-letter queues.
Production experience with Docker and AWS, including ownership of deploys, observability, and on-call.
Security-and-correctness instinct: you prevent isolation breaches, secret leaks, and SQL injection by design.
Strong testing habits and a preference for clear service boundaries and reliable systems over clever ones.
Preferred Qualifications
Built a data-warehouse / analytical ingestion path (CDC, bulk COPY, multi-source connectors).
Experience with billing/subscription systems and webhook-driven state machines.
Worked alongside an LLM, NL→SQL, or data-product team (no ML background required — you make their engine production-grade).
Familiarity with SOC 2 or enterprise security requirements.
What We Offer
The chance to own the backbone of an enterprise AI-data platform from an early stage.
Opportunity to work with modern technologies including Node.js, Python, PostgreSQL, Docker, AWS, queues, and microservices.
